Abstract
A photochromic flow visualization technique was described in 1966 by Popovich in his doctoral thesis and was further discussed in 1967 in a series of papers by Popovich and Hummel. This technique is essentially nonintrusive and has the potential to provide accurate velocity information with a high degree of spacial resolution. The technique uses a soluble photochromic dye that, in the absence of short wavelength light, is colorless when in solution in many nonpolar liquids. The dye may be selectively activated by an ultraviolet light source to produce a bright blue color. When the light source is a sharply focused beam of sufficient power, a narrow and well defined line may be produced in the solvent and dye solution. The subsequent motion of this line may then be recorded photographically for later analysis of velocities.
