Contributions of Charge Transfer Complexes and Photochemical Effects to SERS at a Silver Electrode

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Chemical Physics ((CHEMICAL,volume 33))

Abstract

Recent contributions [1–3] to the surface-enhance Raman scattering (S.E.R.S.) of absorbed species at a silver electrode clearly show an additional enhancement as the surface is illuminated by the laser beam during the oxidization-reduction cycle. This enhancement effect is only obtained when alkali halides are used as electrolytes; it suggest a photodecomposition of the silver halides into metallic clusters. The absorbed molecules may play a role of sensitizers like in the well-known photographic process [4–6].
