Abstract

The phenomenon of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) |1| has for a long time been discussed with different and controversial models |2 – 4|. It is now better accepted than some years ago that a considerable short-range chemical enhancement mechanism exists beside the classical electromagnetic enhancement |5, 6|. A particular short-range model is the so-called “adatom model”, postulating Raman enhancement for adsorbates at sites of atomic scale roughness (“SERS active sites”), involving charge transfer excitations, independently proposed by LAZORENKO-MANEVICH et al. 17, 81 and by BILLMANN et al. |9, 10|. In the mean time, experimental indications for the general validity of this concept have been presented by various research groups |11 – 17|, though principal controversies still persist |18, 19| and many details remain to be understood |5|.
