Abstract

The present study proposes to arrive at an understanding of the phenomenon of child abuse by comparing Western child-rearing practices and styles of socialization with non-Western ones. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to explore those cultural factors, operative in various societies, that either inhibit the practice of child abuse or are conducive to it. It is our contention that intervention programs aimed at the phenomenon of child abuse can only be effective if they take into account its cultural roots.
