Abstract

Kempe et al. (1962) coined the term “battered child syndrome” to identify a clinical condition in young children who have received serious physical abuse. In the United States, the syndrome has been described in almost epidemic proportions (in 1974, 200000 cases were reported) and the public has become increasingly aware of this problem. The battered child syndrome includes all types of child abuse: physical and emotional neglect and psychological deprivation as well as battering.
