Abstract
British trials for the early detection of breast cancer commenced in 1979. The death rates for breast cancer over 10–15 years are being studied in eight populations consisting of all females aged 45–64 years registerd with every general practitioner in the trial districts. Four districts act as controls, two are carrying out extensive educational programmes in breast self-examination, and two have instituted screening programmes of biennial clinical and mammographic screening with clinical examination alone in the intermediate years (UK Trial of Early Detection of Breast Cancer Group 1981).
