Pain in the Cancer Patient

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 89))

Abstract

Cancer pain has long been, and continues to be, one of the most important and pressing issues of modern society and the health care systems of many countries throughout the world. This importance stems from the following facts: (a) cancer pain afflicts millions of people throughout the world annually, and in addition to the severe physiologic, emotional, affective, and economic impact of pain in general, cancer pain has special attributes and significance to the patients and their families; and (b) for reasons given below, all too frequently cancer pain is inadequately managed and consequently many patients spend the last weeks and months or even years of their lives in great discomfort, suffering, and disability, which precludes a quality of life that is vital to these patients.
