Abstract

A considerable amount of experimental and theoretical research on the interplay of superconductivity and magnetism has followed the discovery of the superconducting ternary rare earth (RE) compounds REMo6X8 (X = S, Se) [1.1,2] and RERh4B4 [1.3]. Thus, this second volume on “Superconductivity in Ternary Compounds” is largely devoted to that problem which has fascinated experimentalists and theoreticians alike for more than two decades. The purpose of this chapter is to provide the reader with a brief introduction to the subject and some of the key references. It is by no means complete, and we refer the reader to the following chapters for a detailed description of the phenomena that have been discovered and are presently under investigation.
