Abstract

Shortly after their introduction into clinical medicine in the late 1930 s, sulfonamides were found to be effective treatment for several sexually transmitted diseases, specifically gonorrhea, chancroid, and lymphogranuloma venereum. Early studies showed that 80%–90% of gonococcal isolates were sensitive in vitro to sulfonamides, but by 1942 rapid emergence of resistance occurred and the majority of isolates from patients with uncomplicated gonorrhea were resistant to sulfonamides in vitro. Penicillin replaced sulfonamides as the preferred treatment for gonorrhea. Interestingly, by 1954 and continuing to the present, most gonococci again show in vitro sensitivity to sulfonamide. Unlike gonorrhea, chancroid, and lymphogranuloma venereum have been treated successfully with sulfonamides consistently since 1938.
