Abstract

The state of “Learned Helplessness” — manifesting itself in motivational, emotional and cognitive disturbances — is a product of experiencing repeated non-reinforced exposure to inescapable trauma. In a typical case, helplessness emerges upon being exposed to a series of unmodifiable aversive stimuli, and manifests itself upon having to learn an instrumental task involving coping with that stimulus.
