Abstract

The remarkable superconducting properties of ternary compounds have stimulated a great amount of interest in these materials within the last decade. Among their many striking properties, three have contributed most decisively to this interest: 1) the superconducting critical temperatures Tc are high, reaching 15 K for PbMo6S8; 2) the upper critical magnetic field Hc2 of certain compounds is much higher than in any other class of superconductors; and 3) several structure types of ternary compounds have a regular lattice of magnetic rare-earth (RE) ions and are nevertheless superconducting, thus providing a unique opportunity to study the interplay between superconductivity and long-range magnetic order.
