Abstract
It is my privilege to introduce this workshop on Exercise. I believe that this marks the first occasion on which exercise, and its relation to atherosclerosis, has been accorded a major subsection of the proceedings of this International Symposium. For many years exercise occupied the neglected end of the energy input — energy output continuum, a Cinderella subject, overshadowed by her sisters, diet and drugs. I am sure I speak for all the participants here today in thanking the organizers of this Symposium for recognizing exercise as a research area whose time has come, and indeed, for increasing the general emphasis on the scientific study of prevention of atherosclerosis at this meeting.
