Abstract
The cervical spine or cervical column extends from the cranium to the thorax. The seven cervical vertebrae are denoted C1 to C7 in descending order. The first and second cervical vertebrae present special features regarding form, function, and name: C1 is called the atlas and C2 the axis. In the erect anatomical position the cervical spine presents a posterior concavity (lordosis) that disappears on flexion and in certain subjects with a flat or hollow back. The cervical spine is described in terms of the different aspects shown in the plates.
