Abstract

There has been a considerable change in attitude in recent years towards the use of radiotherapy in rectal cancer. This had come about partly because of an appreciation of the palliative value of x-ray therapy in patients with symptoms from inoperable or recurrent cancer, but also as a result of a greater awareness of the contribution irradiation may make to improved cure rates in early tumours.
