Models of Stratospheric Aerosols and Dust

  • Chapter
The Stratospheric Aerosol Layer

Part of the book series: Topics in Current Physics ((TCPHY,volume 28))

Abstract

This chapter deals with the structure and practical use of stratospheric aerosol models. The general mathematical framework of such models is developed, and several published models are reviewed. Applications and results of previous theoretical aerosol studies are discussed. Model predictions of aerosol physical properties, and of aerosol precursor gas distributions, are compared with measurements. Highlighted are useful insights into the origins and characteristics of aerosols gained through theoretical simulation and analysis. Model predictions of man’s impact on the stratospheric aerosol layer, as a result of ongoing aerospace and industrial activities, are also presented.
