Metastatic CNS Disease in Small Cell Carcinoma of the Bronchus: The Role of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 80))

Abstract

Improved survival frequently reveals new patterns in malignant disease. Control of central nervous system (CNS) disease in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is responsible for the profound improvement in prognosis for that disease [32] and is a stimulus to examine yet more closely specific features of the natural history of other cancers. Small cell cancer of the lung (SCBC) has some similarity to ALL: It is sensitive to some anticancer drugs; it is often widely disseminated; and without treatment it is rapidly fatal, and spreading to the CNS is now recognised to occur in a significant proportion of cases. Although only representing about 25% of lung cancers, it is of particular interest because of these characteristics.
