Abstract

Molecules which contain at least several hundred atoms are called macromolecules. We encounter them in nature — cellulose, proteins — and synthesize them in laboratory — polyethylene, nylon. A molecule is called polymeric if it is constructed of a small number of similar links (monomers), which are repeated in an orderly random fashion. The monomeric links can be small, e.g., the CH2 group is the elementary link of a polyethylene molecule, but they can also be rather large, containing scores of atoms.
