Abstract
Theoretically, an influx of steroids into amniotic fluid could occur via the umbilical cord or the placenta, according to concentration gradients. Up to the present time, such pathways have not yet been proved. Therefore, the main access of steroids into the amniotic fluid is by fetal urine. This conclusion is based upon identical steroid patterns in both biologic fluids [34].
