Abstract

During the past 20 years interest in amniotic fluid and its constituents has been expanding. This interest is manifold reaching from studies on the origin and regulation of amniotic fluid to inorganic and organic substances, enzymes, hormones, and cell particles. From the knowledge gained, useful clinical applications have been developed, such as intrauterine monitoring of fetal well-being or early prenatal diagnosis of fetal abnormalities.
