Abstract
Differentiation of the indications for and the applications of skin grafts took place during the period 1930–1950. Several factors played a role in this evolution: improved technique, specialization by some surgeons, and improved preoperative, peroperative and postoperative care. The number of patients requiring operative treatment of skin defects increased, partly also as a result of the events of World War II; the experience gained by surgeons who had to treat these injuries increased proportionally.
