Abstract
The three lectures delivered this morning were essential and clear and there has already been a good discussion. When contemplating the current status of stability problems in creep mechanics it might be advantageous then to briefly look backwards to gain some perspective. Anyone familiar with the current literature will know that stability is a very live discipline and is discussed with different degrees of sophistication. For a long time stability theory was concerned with calculations of adjacent equilibria for elastic structures. During the last decades, however, remarkable progress has been achieved by writers such as Budiansky, Hill, Hutchinson, Koiter, Leipholz, Sewell, Ziegler and many others in particular regarding foundations of a general theory.
