Abstract
High Magnetic Fields have been a valuable tool in solid state physics for a long time [1]. The highest fields, which can be produced nowadays, are in the 100 Tesla range. They are, however, of short duration, typically of the order of microseconds. Although many interesting results have been achieved with pulsed fields [2], it is true that continuous fields of a smaller magnitude are usually more advantageous. The reason for this is that for steady field measurements very sensitive and sophisticated experimental methods can be used, which for instance allow to reduce the noise level substantially. Moreover continuous fields in general offer larger volume which makes complicated experimental set-ups possible. For all these reasons the efforts to improve the methods for the generation of higher dc magnetic fields have never ended.
