Part of the book series: Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences ((SSSOL,volume 23))

Abstract

We are concerned with systems which are spread out in one spatial dimension, and where different spatial portions can be in different states of local stability, separated in space by transition regions. We will largely, but not exclusively, discuss systems where the differing states of local stability are not equally favored, and the transition regions thus have a preferred direction of motion. We will also emphasize questions which go beyond the deterministic kinetics of such systems, and treat fluctuations. We can go on to classify our subject in a few additional ways.

  35. The u(F) curves in Fig. 1 of Ref. 21 and Fig. 3 of Ref. 26 are erroneous. To obtain the correct u values from these figures they should be multiplied by \( \sqrt {{(1}} - {(F/{V_0})^{{2)}}} \). See Fig. 2 of this paper.
