A Brief Survey of Hormones and Osmoregulation

  • Chapter
Osmoregulation in Birds

Part of the book series: Zoophysiology ((ZOOPHYSIOLOGY,volume 12))

Abstract

The most important hormones involved in avian osmoregulation besides AVT, which is treated fully in Sect. 5.2, are those of the adrenal cortex. In this chapter a brief survey on the pituitary-adrenal axis of birds will be presented followed by a short description of the role of its hormones in regulation of renal function. Effects on cloaca and salt gland are treated in Chaps. 6 and 7. A comprehensive survey of the function of adrenocortical hormones has been published by Holmes and Phillips (1976).
