Abstract
Chemotherapy has had only a limited role in the treatment of recurrent squamous cell cancer of the head and neck. Methotrexate (MTX), the most extensively studied drug, produces 30%–50% response rates. Most of these responses, however, are of short duration [1]. Although response rates with high-dose MTX with leucovorin rescue (LR) have not been shown to be superior to those with conventional doses of MTX [5, 12], the relative lack of hematologic toxicity with the high-dose regimen [13, 14] may be advantageous when MTX is combined with other chemotherapeutic agents.
