Eine Aufgabe für Epidemiologen besteht darin, durch präventive Maßnahmen den Ausbruch von Epidemien zu verhindern. Dabei sei nach Gottstein (4) unter einer Epidemie die Erhöhung der Erkrankungen sowie der Erkran-kungs- und Sterbefälle in der Zeiteinheit über die Grenzen des Normalen verstanden, wobei dieser Anstieg durch ‘Ursachen’ bedingt wird, die. unter normalen Verhältnissen bei der betreffenden Bevölkerung nicht oder nur in geringer Ausdehnung beobachtet werden.
