Abstract

The biosynthesis of the first pyrimidine nucleotide, UMP, universally requires six enzymes (Reichard 1959): a glutamine-utilizing carbamyl-P synthetase (Levenberg 1962); aspartate transcarbamylase; dihydroorotase; a dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (Taylor et al. 1966) that couples with the respiratory chain (and not with NAD); orotate phos-phoribosyltransferase and orotidylate decarboxylase (Fig. 1).
