Abstract

Low temperature specific heat measurements on a single crystal of trigonal Se result in a Debye temperature Θ D = 186 K. This unexpected high value will be compared with the elastic Debye temperature which has been calculated from a set of the elastic constants Cik for trigonal Se. Recommended values for Cik at 300 K and 0 K, respectively, have been calculated from a review of recent measurements of the ultrasound velocities, the piezoelectric effect and the phonon dispersion curves for trigonal Se and Te. For Te the calculated elastic Θ D is in good agreement with the specific heat data, whereas for Se the calculation results in a too small value. This discrepancy will be discussed with regard to the influence of the piezoelectric effect on the acoustic phonons propagating in piezoactive directions.
