Hormone Assay Techniques Used in the Study of Lactation

Hormonal Control of Lactation

Part of the book series: Monographs on Endocrinology ((ENDOCRINOLOGY,volume 15))

Abstract

Bio-assay methods for the study of prolactin and GH activity in body fluids have many limitations at present. They are generally not sensitive enough to measure basal levels of the hormones, they are time-consuming and it is practicable to handle only limited numbers of samples. Bio-assays may also be subject to non-specific interference by serum or plasma factors and their precision does not approach that of radio-immunoassays (RIA) or radioreceptor assays (RRA).
