Growth and Development of the Mammary Gland

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Monographs on Endocrinology ((ENDOCRINOLOGY,volume 15))

Abstract

The mammary gland arises in the ventral ectoderm in embryonic life. Similarities in mammary gland development, structure and function between monotremes, marsupials and eutherian mammals suggest a common ancestry and support the possibility that the therapsid reptilian ancestors of the mammals were milk producing (see Morriss, 1975).
