Abstract
The porphyrin biosynthetic pathway carries out heterogeneous functions of haem catalysis: oxygen transport (haemoglobin) and storage (myoglobin), respiration (cytochromes), or in general, biological oxidation, and at least, drug metabolism (cytochrome P-450) [3]. For all these actions protohaem (iron protoporphyrin), which belongs to the porphyrin isomer III series, is required as prosthetic group. Coproporphyrinogen oxidase, a mitochondrial enzyme, can only handle coproporphyrinogen III. Thus, the formation of porphyrinogens of the isomer I type ends at the sequence of coproporphyrin(ogen).
