Abstract
Crystals with layer structures [15.31] are, at present, of particular interest. Their properties can very often be changed by intercalation, i.e., their structural anisotropy provides a short of chemical tool for a certain material “design” technique. The theoretical description is often done in terms of valence forces combined with axially symmetric forces. An important feature seems to be the structurally induced static dipoles [15.28, 29] which lead to a quantitative understanding of the splitting between TO and LO branches. A full application of models used in cubic crystals should be very useful.
