Abstract

The iron-sulfur proteins are widely distributed in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, occurring both as simple proteins with one or more active iron-sulfur complexes (such as rubredoxin and ferredoxin) and complex proteins containing other functional groups in addition to the iron-sulfur centers (such as oxygenase and nitrogenase). They have been studied by a number of physical techniques and the three-dimensional structures of some of the simpler ones have been determined by X-ray analysis. I will describe the known three-dimensional structures of the iron-sulfur proteins and the analog compounds that are models for them and then discuss some observations relating the structure and the function of these intriguing molecules.
