Abstract
In mitochondria, the machinery for oxidative phosphorylation is contained in the inner membrane, which is composed of approximately 70% protein and 30% lipid. Systematic fractionation of inner membrane preparations from bovine heart mitochondria showed in 1961 that the mitochondrial electron transport system could be fragmented into four protein-lipid enzyme systems with the following catalytic properties:

NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase

Succinate:ubiquinone oxidoreductase

III.
Reduced ubiquinone:ferricytochrome c oxidoreductase

IV.
Ferrocytochrome c:oxygen oxidoreductase
