Abstract
Cancer is a major health problem both as a cause of sickness and death and as a heavy burden on medical care resources throughout the world. In 1975 about 5 million people died from cancer in the world out of an estimated total number of 50 million deaths. For Europe and the USSR the number of deaths from cancer may be estimated at one and a quarter million, or 16 %. Moreover, it is a problem of increasing relative importance as other diseases decline. WHO has accordingly endeavoured to give special attention to the compilation of statistics in this field.
