Abstract

In autoimmune disorders, the organism’s ability to discriminate self from foreign antigens is disturbed, leading to autorecognition and autodestruction due to a variety of immunopathologic mechanisms. Autoantibodies and immune complexes may be present in the serum, and target organs may undergo vasculitic destruction or become infiltrated with lymphocytes and plasma cells. Quite recently, immunologists have come to appreciate that autorecognition of histocompatibility antigens on lymphocyte membranes is an important regulatory mechanism allowing the immune system to react against viral and other foreign antigens [17]. Either by an alteration of these self-antigens or by a dual recognition mechanism, immune reactions against these foreign antigens are facilitated through recognition of the self-antigenic component.
