Abstract
Tunneling spectroscopy has unique capabilities for the vibrational spectroscopy of thin organic films. After an examination of its spectral range, sensitivity, resolution, and selection rules, and a comparison of it with other techniques for vibrational spectroscopy, I will discuss six areas of application: (1) surface chemistry, (2) identification of biochemicals, (3) trace substance detection, (4) adhesion, (5) radiation damage, and (6) lubrication.
