Abstract
The application of inelastic and elastic neutron scattering to the study of the dynamics and structure of adsorbed films is briefly reviewed. The experimental techniques are illustrated for the case of a butane film (CH3 (CH2)2CH3) adsorbed on small graphite particles. The inelastic spectrum of the butane monolayer contains new surface vibratory modes as well as the intramolecular vibrations observed in the bulk solid. A simple model fitting the principal features of the monolayer spectrum is used to predict the orientation of the adsorbed molecule and the location and strength of the bonds to the substrate. The uniqueness of this model is discussed. The use of elastic neutron diffraction to investigate the long-range order within the film and its potential for determining the orientation of the adsorbed molecules is also described. At several points in the discussion the applications of neutron scattering and IETS to molecular spectroscopy are compared and the paper concludes with suggestions for how the two techniques may interact in the future.
