Abstract
Today all of us are in a situation where we must find “relevance” in our research work. For surface science, catalysis has furnished an easily identifiable subject which is relevant and may be impacted by basic surface science. It has been claimed by several speakers at this conference that IETS is applicable to catalytic problems. I will not comment upon these claims, since I do not have sufficient experience or knowledge in this area. What I will address is the potential impact of IETS upon surface physics and chemistry.
