Abstract
Over the past one hundred years the vestibular system has attracted the interest of many investigators. Among the pioneers were such illustrious scientists as Flourens, Goltz, Mach, Breuer, Ewald, Menière and Bárány. They were concerned with the mechanics of the vestibular receptor organs in the inner ear and studied the system at an entirely behavioral and/or theoretical level. In the 30s of this century it was Steinhausen (1931, 1933) who, based on a series of very elegant experiments, formulated the first physical and mathematical model of the cupula-endolymph system of the semicircular canals: the torsion pendulum model.
