The Combination of Surgery, Radiotherapy, and Chemotherapy in the Treatment of Gastric Cancer

  • Chapter
Tactics and Strategy in Cancer Treatment

Abstract

The incidence of gastric cancer in Israel is 28 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year. Thirteen percent of those dying from cancer die from stomach cancer [16]. Surgical resection is the principal modality, offering the only hope for long-term disease-free survival. However, of the 20–50% of patients who can undergo “curative” resection, four out of five die from recurrent cancer within 5 years [2]. Chemotherapy has been primarily confined to palliative treatment [2, 3]. Since 1969 we have been treating radically operated patients with gastric cancer by adjuvant radio-chemotherapy and inoperable patients by radio- and chemotherapy or chemotherapy alone.
