Abstract

Polycythemia vera is a relatively rare disease with an average annual incidence rate of from 0.6–1.6/100,000 population. The mean age of onset is 55–60 years, and there is an increasing annual incidence rate with advancing age. Males fall more often ill than females (approximately 2:1; [2, 13, 18]). The mean survival time of untreated patients is only about 18 months [2].
