Abstract

Phonons play an important role in all phases of solid state physics. Phenomena such as resistivity, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and superconductivity, for example, are related directly to the phonon density of states. Other properties such as the dielectric function, ultrasonics, the interatomic potentials (through the force constants) are more intimately related to the normal modes of vibration (phonons) of the crystal. These in turn are, of course, ultimately related to the electronic structure of the crystal.
