Abstract
Unfortunately, there are no practical statistical methods currently available for estimating the expected number of simultaneously diagnosed multiple primary malignant tumors. Because of this, it will not be possible to compare the observed experience with an expected experience. In the case of simultaneously diagnosed (synchronous) multiple primaries, we must restrict ourselves to a descriptive analysis of what was found. The Connecticut Tumor Registry defines synchronous multiple primaries as those diagnosed within the same month. The more malignant or life-threatening neoplasm is arbitrarily designated as the index or first primary cancer. If one of the pair, trio, etc. of simultaneously diagnosed primary malignancies cannot be so designated, the assignment to first or subsequent primary status is done at random.
