Abstract
The organizing committee asked me to say a few words about some of the recent efforts to build speech understanding systems. There seem to exist interesting analogies between the way in which these systems are organized and the way we perceive speech. It is certainly true that these efforts have opened my eyes to the bigger picture of the perception of spoken language. The magnitude of the problem is clearly demonstrated when one has a practical engineering goal in mind. It is difficult to study speech understanding in the abstract. That is why it can be of some benefit to observe the problems encountered in attempts to build a speech understanding system that operates in limited semantic, syntactic and lexical domains.
