Experimental Induction of Bone Tumors by Short-Lived Bone-Seeking Radionuclides

Abstract

The human radium cases based on industrial occupation with 226Ra and 228Ra and medical experience with 226Ra and 224Ra continue to provide basic information on the effects of internal radiation and radio-carcinogenesis in man. The danger of strontium-90 in atomic fall-out and the possibility of industrial accidents with plutonium and other dangerous alpha-emitters have stimulated experimental research in this field. Animal experiments will help to elucidate the problems -of radiation hazards and in addition increase our understanding of the mechanisms of radiation carcinogenesis.
