Abstract

Volume 49/5 deals with typical phenomena of the upper atmosphere. Natural optical emissions occurring under magnetically quiet conditions are analyzed by Vassy and Vassy. The much stronger auroral emissions were described by Akasofu, Chapman and Meinel in Vol. 49/1. My dear friend Etienne Vassy died suddenly on October 30, 1969. The first version of his manuscript was just ready at that time; it was later finalized by his co-author and wife Arlette Vassy.
