Part of the book series: Texts and Monographs in Physics ((TMP))

Abstract

This chapter begins with a short discussion of the system of units used throughout this book (Section 1-1). After a brief review of the theory of special relativity (Section 1-2) and quantum mechanics (Section 1-3), the concept of the localizable field is introduced (Sections 1-4 and 1-5). We next proceed to define canonical transformations for a field (Section 1-6) and apply the concept to the transformations induced by the inhomogeneous Lorentz group (Section 1-7). This leads us to the ten integrals of momentum and angular momentum.
