Abstract

Most soil fungi are decomposer organisms, using plant litter compounds as their carbon and energy source. In order to understand the biology and the dynamics of the decomposition process, knowledge is necessary of the species composition, properties, biomass, and activities of the fungal populations. This paper deals with the estimates of the biomass of mycoflora in the Norwegian (Hardangervidda) and Swedish (Abisko, Stordalen) IBP tundra sites (Sonesson et al., 1975), and a discussion of fungal production. Details of the Swedish investigations were reported by Hayes (1973) and Rheinberg (1975).
