Effects of Land Use on Salt Distribution in the Soil

Plants in Saline Environments

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 15))

Abstract

Saline soils are known to exist in many places throughout the world, particularly in arid and semi-arid zones. The great majority of these areas appear to have been affected by excess soluble salts for thousands of years, but there is a very large area of land which has become saline within the period of recorded history. The evidence suggests that these areas of secondary salinity result from man’s activities, or in the language of this decade, secondary salinity is an environmental problem.
